Cross-Country

First Airplane Solo

This is a picture of the ASA club Grob 102 that I often flew cross-country.  I don't quite consider it to be a high-performance glider, because it has a 38:1 glide ratio;  I consider 40:1 and higher to be high-performance. On this day I landed off-field at an airstrip North of Lake Pleasant.  That airstrip is often referred to as "Turf North".

My first powered airplane solo was in this yellow Aronca Champ that belonged to my dad.  If you look closely you will see another Champ in the distance that belongs to James Butler.  The morning after he soloed me, we did some formation flying together in these 2 Champs.
